The History of Hair Bows

Hair bows became popular during the Victorian Era (ruled by Queen Victoria, 1837-1901) and the Edwardian Era (ruled by King Edward VII, 1901-1910). The Victorian woman seldom wore a bow in her hair but if she did, it was usually black or another modest color, and small in size. The Edwardian Era was more fanciful and a woman would wear bows of different colors and sizes, some being quite large compared to today's bows. During this Era, many upperclass women and little girls wore hair bows as fashion accessories (see the photo to the left).

A hair clip is used to keep hair off your face. Add a bow, and it becomes a fashion accessory! Bows certainly haven't gone out of style, and today the variety of colors, sizes and styles means there is always a bow that's just right for you. See our page with fabulous flower hair clips too.
