The Theory of Stress Relief

Stress occurs when someone is in an unpleasant environment. The "fight or flight response" kicks in, and there is an increase of adrenaline and cortisol, both considered stress hormones. This causes an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, resulting in anxiety, sleeplessness, loss of appetite, disturbances in memory and concentration, and mood disorders such as outbursts of anger.
How Do These Things Work?
While stress relief balls are used by many, not much research has been done on their effectiveness. However, squeezing a stress relief ball (or an edamame stress pea pod) diverts attention away from the stressor, and the body and mind are both able to relax, much as in meditation. Mental energy dissipates, there is an improvement in blood circulation which helps to provide more nutrients like oxygen, and the nerves in the hands are stimulated, as in accupressure. These nerves carry signals to the brain's limbic system, which is linked with emotions. Stimulation of the brain also produces endorphins (associated with runner's high) which are natural pain relievers and sedatives.
